Looking for a job

I have been unemployed for 5 months now, and I am getting discouraged. I don't have a piece of paper that employers demand (college degree) even though I had an excellent education and can read/write better than a lot of college graduates. Plus, I have common sense and real-world experience. Which should count for something. But it doesn't.
